Haunted Locations in England – The Doorway to Another World

England has a reputation of being one of those places that have various haunted houses and dwellings (check out the secret places of Paris!). I decided to visit some of the haunted locations in England myself to witness the evil that people claim to have seen there.

Some of the haunted locations in England were places where tragedy had struck and the ghosts of the dead did not intend to leave.

Others apparently, had murdered witches still lurking around in the dark to take revenge.

I am a big fan of Ghost Hunters which is why I decided to go on this adventure. So I took to the road early one Saturday morning and started my journey towards the horrors and haunted locations in England!

Here I list some of the places that truly fascinated me.

Borley Rectory

Probably the most famous in whole of England Borley Rectory was one of my top choices of the places I wanted to visit. Suspected to be haunted ever since it was built this old, gothic Victorian mansion was constructed in 1862.

Burnt to ground by a fire in 1939 the mansion was remodeled in 1944. Footsteps had been heard all over the place. This did not frighten me as almost all haunted houses do have cases of unexplained knocks, whispers and footsteps.

What did make my hair stand on end was the fact that a Reverend’s wife had found a woman’s skull wrapped in brown packaging and stashed inside her cupboard. I found the incident very creepy indeed. However, I did not experience any paranormal activity, though the mansion did have a sense of loss and a heavy feeling of sadness.

And I was very glad when I finally stepped out of the gloomy mansion and into the bright sunlight! This one definitely took the cake as being the top haunted locations in England.

Berry Pomeroy Castle

The ghosts of the Blue Lady and the White Lady haunt the Berry Pomeroy Castle, believed to be one of the most eerie castles in England.

Berry Pomeroy Castle
Berry Pomeroy Castle

This picturesque castle has the reputation of concealing sinister secrets behind its pretty façade. The White Lady haunts the dungeons and is harmless according to the locals. It is the Blue Lady we should be afraid of.

She haunts the tower and attracts passersby to it, who plunge to their death if they succumb to her. The place itself is very beautiful and I personally did not feel threatened by it.

Ancient Ram Inn

This Ancient Ram Hotel easily makes the top list of haunted locations in England.

The hotel has been owned by many people since 1145 and is believed to be one of the most haunted inns. This did not surprise me because history revealed that the house had been a location where different disturbing incidents had taken place.

Black magic and child sacrifices are a big part of the house’s past so the eerie feeling the inn gives off does not feel bizarre. You feel once you get inside that it is unsafe and you feel like you are being watched.

John Humphries, the current owner of the hotel believed that the lodge is haunted by various spooks including a witch, orbs, two demons and various other ghostly presences. No wonder the inn gave me the heebie jeebies!

Do you believe in haunted houses? Well, whether you do or don’t, these haunted locations in England are sure to give you a sense of excitement!

Hong Kong Festivals – The Basic Lists of Festivities

Hong Kong is a very vibrant city, especially when it comes to festivals. It holds amazing festivals every year that give you a great chance to mingle with your loved ones, friends, coworkers. I always loved the festivals, in additional to some really cool facts, in Hong Kong for many reasons. Perhaps the main reason is Hong Kong stands at the crossing of Eastern and Western cultures so you have this amazing blends of life styles.

The city becomes vibrant, people are off from work, and there is always some place to go to enjoy the festivals. While this list is comprehensive, it is in no way complete, just too many festivals to enjoy!

Hong Kong Festivals – Tuen Ng Dragon Boat festival

This is a very colorful festival in which boat races are held, and my personal favorite! Remind me to tell you my story of reaching one of the yachts that was sponsoring a group of racers.

Boats are in the shapes of attractive and beautifully decorated dragons. It is normally held in June, but the dates and months can vary depending on the dates of the lunar calendar. The races are organized at ten different sites and attract the locals as well as tourists from different countries.

I normally enjoyed going to the back side of Hong Kong island to Stanley Beach.

Hong Kong Festivals – Mid-Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn Festival, Hong Kong

It is one of the biggest festivals in Hong Kong and is considered to be the second most important festival in China, after the Chinese New Year Festival. Fire breathing dragons, lantern displays and gorgeous lion dances are some of the biggest highlights of this festival. They also have some of the best snacks!

I’ll be writing more on this festival in another article. While The Dragon boat races were the most exciting, this for me was the most meaningful.

Hong Kong Festivals – Chinese New Year Festival

The Chinese New Year is celebrated with a lot of zeal and fervor each year. Different events are held in Hong Kong to celebrate it. Three days of amazing events are planned almost every year to enjoy this occasion. A fantastic parade and entertainment extravaganza is held close to the Victoria Harbor on 31st January.

Another important event of this festival is the stunning display of fireworks. I love fireworks, so I eagerly wait for the Chinese New Year to arrive every year.

Chinese Lunar New Year, Hong Kong

Hong Kong Festivals – Hong Kong Winter Festival

This festival is mainly held for attracting tourists to Hong Kong. The streets are decorated with beautiful lights, sales are held in almost all the stores and snacks are distributed amongst the locals. It is organized before the New Year every year.

Hong Kong Festivals – Hong Kong Shopping Festival

This is heaven for all the ladies. It is an amazing festival that is mostly held in August and offers something for everyone.

Hong Kong Festivals – Christmas

Christmas is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm in Hong Kong. The entire city is decorated with lights and Christmas trees. You can see Santa Claus distributing gifts amongst the children in shopping malls, and you get to enjoy discounted prices on goods and services as well.

One of the best places to visit in Hong Kong during this time of the year is Disney Land. Lots of entertaining events are organized there for kids.

Hong Kong Festivals – The Arts Festival

If you are an arts aficionado, then you’ll love this festival a lot. It was held for the first time during 1973, and has been organized annually since then. Ballets, operas, dramas and symphonies are the major attractions of this event. I attended a few performances last year and they were absolutely stunning!

Hong Kong Festivals – Horse Racing Festival

This is the most awaited festival by the enthusiasts of horses and gambling. It is celebrated mostly from January till July each year, but the timings can change.

This was really just a brief list but it contains some of the best and most interesting of the festivals and holidays in Hong Kong. I will be writing about more of them and also more in-depth, taking one festival and writing about it at length. So much of the festivals are tied to the culture and are very old in customs and traditions.

Common Chinese Food – The Great and Expected Variety

With 56 ethnic groups in China and nearly every town having its own staple food, it was never a question of finding but of “What to eat”? While it is commonly thought that all Chinese eat rice, it’s not so accurate. More people in Southern China, where rice is grown, eat rice. Northern Chinese eat heavier foods, including breads.

I remember back in 1999, it was the first time I had come to Hong Kong with my dad on a business trip. I was in high school and it dawned on me that Chinese food as we know it in the United States is not what people over in Hong Kong and China consider to be common Chinese food!

Tofu is a staple food of China
Tofu is a staple food of China

But it tasted so much better!

However, whenever you travel anywhere outside your country, it may be a concern for some people about finding things to eat (be sure to learn here about cultural differences). I had the same concerns, and often did while traveling the country as many regions had foods I just wouldn’t eat.

China is well known for its delicious cuisine and is a part of the menu served in different countries as well. However, while in China, you might not like everything on the menu.

So it’s a great to have some insider knowledge to what is common Chinese food.

You will find a huge variety of mouthwatering foods in different restaurants and on the food stalls in markets in China. Wheat and rice are the staple foods of the country and are commonly used in the majority of Chinese dishes. Corn, potato, buckwheat, sweet potato, legumes, millet noodles, stuffed buns, bread, dough sticks, egg, tofu and bread are also commonly eaten foods in the country.

Hot Fish Stew

Rice is one of the most common Chinese foods served restaurants.

Different vegetables, spices, noodles, egg and ingredients are added to it to create various varieties of rice. Some of the widely served rice dishes by vendors and restaurants in the country include egg fried rice, chicken fried rice, fried rice with garlic and beef, rice with curry beef, stewed beef rice, rice with braised beef brisket, fried rice with mixed vegetables and bacon, rice with assorted meat and white gourd in soup, rice in chicken soup and Hainan’s chicken rice.

Besides rice, noodles are one of the favorite and common Chinese foods. You will find many noodle dishes in Chinese food stalls and restaurants. Some of the famous ones include Guangzhou Shah Fen, Lanzhou Hand-Pulled Noodles, Guilin rice noodles, noodles with beef in brown sauce, rice noodles in red oil, beef stretched noodles, Sichuan noodles, cold noodles, Liuzhou snail rice noodles and rice noodles with horsemeat.

Egg is another common Chinese food that you will certainly find being sold by Chinese vendors. Residents of the country eat eggs in their routine and commonly use eggs of duck, quails, pigeon, goose and chicken. Century and salted duck eggs are two of the widely eaten egg dishes in the country and are often found on the menu of various restaurants in the country.

Century Eggs

Fish is a common Chinese food consumed in the country and is considered a sign of prosperity and abundance. It is an integral part of the feast prepared during the Chinese New Year by the numerous households in the country. Some of the widely eaten kinds of shellfish and fish include grass carp, sea bass, carp, squid, crab, soft-shell turtle, crucian, prawn, oysters, shrimp and scallops.

Few of the famous fish dishes served in Chinese restaurants include West lake vinegar fish, broth-steamed bass, Xiamen boiled fresh fish, Sichuan poached fish fillets in hot chili oil and Hunan steamed fish head served with diced hot red peppers.

Steamed Fish is a famously served at the end of meals

A word for the adventurer in us all, there are markets across the country, usually in the deeper provinces and regions of the country, that serve a well… different plate of food. These would be completely foreign to a westerner and even some Chinese whom don’t travel to those regions of the country. What is a common Chinese food for someone in China may not be so common for someone else!

However, while traveling in the country, try not to make faces or vomit on seeing any of these foods being sold while you are amidst the Chinese people. If you are extremely grossed out and cannot control it, politely excuse yourself from the crowd and take a minute alone.

But, most of the food does taste great, and there is so much to go around. If you truly do not feel comfortable eating the foods, stick to rice and yes, beer. It can be quite filling.

Thanksgiving in Hong Kong – Being Away From Home

It was 2003 and it would be my first Thanksgiving in Hong Kong and being away from home. I had moved to China earlier in the year and now came the precious holiday of Thanksgiving. We all know what it means in our hearts, anywhere in the world. Even if you don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, we all share a time when we want to be with our families, friends, and be home.

But I couldn’t do that being 9000 miles away and having Thanksgiving in Hong Kong.

As the weeks came closer to the holiday I had tried not to think about the date or what it meant. I think I was upset and sad, and a bit homesick. I was just 23 years old and off on a big adventure that I didn’t quite understand yet. I was fortunate to have made some friends in the short time I was in Hong Kong but even for them, they didn’t really want to talk about Thanksgiving.

Finally it dawned on us that we were now in our new home. We were each others new family. If we couldn’t spend Thanksgiving with our families back home, then we would spend Thanksgiving in Hong Kong together. So the questions came up of: Where to eat? Do they even have turkey in Hong Kong? Where do other westerners go for Thanksgiving? And how to find out? This was 2003 and while the Internet was in full swing then, it was no where near as powerful or diverse as it is now.

Thanksgiving Meal
Thanksgiving Meal

So the group of us took it upon ourselves to do as much research as possible. I spoke to some coworkers, local Hong Kong people. They suggested Central, Hong Kong. Central is like Downtown, Manhattan. It is filled with westerners, western style restaurants, bars, pubs, places to relax and hang out. There must be a place there!

Surprisingly, then, not as much as one would have thought. It turns out, as we all learned, that the turkey is usually replaced with chicken as the choice of meat. Any turkey would have to have been flown in (first class?) from the States and would be too costly for most restaurants, even for Thanksgiving in Hong Kong!

So we scoured around Central, Lan Kwai Fong, Soho and found about a handful of restaurants that would actually have turkey! But! We were too late… Turns out, people book months in advance for a seat and a slice of that delicious turkey and gravy.

Now being the day of Thanksgiving, we all met at the bottom of the hill of Lan Kwai Fong, depressed. It then dawned on us that Thanksgiving is really about, well, yes Turkey, but being grateful for what you do have and we had each other, we had our adventures, and we were in Hong Kong! With a renewed spirit, we walked up into Soho and found a quant little restaurant.

We banged (being the rowdy American cowboys that we were) on the table and demanded the best Turkey substitute! It was after all, finally, Thanksgiving in Hong Kong!

After a few eyebrows raised by the waiter, the cook came out (perhaps a big nervous, too). He was most distressed about not having Turkey. But he did blow away our minds by saying he did have chickens roasted the way one makes a turkey. We all looked at each other and smiled!

It was good enough!

So we enjoyed our chickens cooked like turkey’s. Enjoyed our friendship, thought of home and our new lives being in Hong Kong.

This year I am thankful for my wonderful wife, our 2 year old daughter and our families. Even though we are in NY this year celebrating the feast, and with turkey, I will always remember that day and what those memories meant to me having Thanksgiving in Hong Kong.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving, happy holidays, and a wonderful winter.

Ski Italy – The Picture Perfect Place for Winter Fun

Northern Italy, along the border with Switzerland, is dotted with ski resorts and is the best place to Ski Italy. There are some which are well-known for being extremely challenging, offering intriguing and tricky runs for expert skiers all through the winter.

Skiers on a Piste
Skiers on a Piste

But there are also resorts with much more open slopes perfect for families and beginners. I have yet to come across one which perfectly encompasses these two elements, they all seem to be blend well towards one or the other.

Ski Italy – Arabba

Arabba is a small village located in the Dolomites. It is surrounded by ridges which provide access to other ski areas so there is no shortage of pistes and slopes. There is guaranteed snow throughout the winter months and plenty of challenges for experienced skiers.

The village itself is very small but you really get the sense of being immersed in the mountain environment. There are a variety of black runs which are tricky and exhilarating. It’s not the best resort for beginners, so perhaps not a great choice for a family vacation. A great choice for a couple’s vacation if you are expert skiers, or a boys’ trip away.

The Village of Arabba
The Village of Arabba

The Ornella run which goes down to Pescoi. It is one of the biggest sources of entertainment for locals and is extremely tricky even for the most expert of skiers. It’s totally worth it as the ultimate adrenaline rush and is a local challenge for visiting skiers.

Ski Italy – Passo Tonale

Passo Tonale is where the Italian national ski team goes to train. There is guaranteed snow from October all the way through to May and so is a favorite amongst ski addicts.

There are two ski schools and the nursery slopes are perfect for learning to ski from scratch.

passo tonale
passo tonale

The marked pistes are not very challenging at all so are much more suited to beginner and intermediate skiers. There are numerous bars, cafés and restaurants for après-ski fun and relaxation.

There is a supermarket should you prefer to cook in-house and plenty of leisure facilities. The resort is really geared up for families and has a lot of deals offering free ski passes for kids and really great value family accommodation.

It is typically not as attractive to young people or couples as there is not a huge amount of exciting nightlife.

Ski Italy – Cervinia

cervino look from cervinia,italy.
cervino look from cervinia,italy.

Cervinia is a resort located at the base of the Matterhorn with very open slopes. It is high up and there is little protection from the bright sun so sunscreen is an absolute must. On a clear day it is a beautiful place to ski. The pistes are well-marked and relatively well-maintained.

But, when the weather turns bad, there is no protection from the elements and the slopes can become pretty dangerous. Most of the lifts in Cervinia are fast, they have replaced most of the old, slow lifts so very few of these remain.

Cervinia is a family resort really, making it one of the best places to Ski Italy.

There is also plenty exciting for expert skiers. The few black runs may be a little easy for the most advanced skiers, but they’re tough in their own right.

The off-piste skiing would be more attractive to experienced skiers and heli-skiing is an option.

Cervinia Town
Cervinia Town

Cervinia has over 50 restaurants, so you will never be stuck for somewhere to eat. There is a natural ice rink which is pretty cool and a fitness center. Some of the hotels have pools but there is little entertainment for non-skiers. It’s a great resort for a first-time family skiing vacation, as long as all of you plan on hitting the slopes.

Cervinia was the first place I took my wife, whom was my girlfriend, Katy to Ski Italy.

We were living in Israel at the time and it was quite an experience to get there. I’ll be writing about the entire story in another article. But the place is really beautiful, great teachers, awesome food, sights that take your breath away, and perfect places to stay.

And the other cool thing of Cervinia, you can ski down the backside to Switzerland! But be careful, the lifts do close at a certain time and it may not be the best thing to be stranded for the night!

Oh, and depending upon when you come to Northern Italy, The Dolomites are an incredible place to see.

Enjoy!

Japan Transportation – The Needed Basics for Tourists

Exploring any country requires a travel guide, either in the form of a book, a person, or a blog to point out the places that are a must-see. And when traveling here, Japan transportation are the best ways for getting around the cities and country.

Another requirement is of a basic understanding of the language that the locals speak, so you can at least order food without stumbling and ending up with something completely un-edible.
But I admit, it sure is fun trying!

Kiyomizu Dera temple in Kyoto , Japan
Kiyomizu Dera temple in Kyoto , Japan

One more essential requisite for travelling to and exploring a country, especially one as diverse as Japan, is having knowledge of the available transport options at your destination.

Without this knowledge, you will be lost the minute you step off the plane.

If you are lucky enough to have a private car coming to pick you up from the airport, kudos, but if not, then you have come to the right place where I will guide you through the many Japan transportation options that are available to a tourist in Japan.

Japan Transportation – An Extensive System Mapping Throughout The Country

Tokyo Train Station
Tokyo Train Station

Japan is well-known and famous for its highly extensive options of transport, that are found everywhere in the country – even the small cities. Other than the vast and efficient train systems that run in the country, there are also various other transportation options which are just as attractive choices as the bullet train if you are a tourist.

Within metropolitan areas and between large cities, the public transportation system of the country is efficient and organized. The local population favors the system not only for the convenience it offers but also because of the qualities that are characteristic of the nation i.e. its punctuality and the awesome service.

Japan Transportation – Traveling by Train

The four major islands of Japan are connected by a vast and reliable network of trains. For visitors, nothing is more convenient than travelling around Japan by train. Following are the types of trains you should know about before embarking on the journey.

  • Local Train: stops at every station.
  • Rapid Train: skips some stations.
  • Express Train: stops at even fewer stations. Japan Railways charge a separate fee, in addition.
  • Limited Express Train: stops at major stations. The fee is between 500 and 4000 yen, in addition the base fare.
  • Super Express Train: is only operated by Japan Railways, and runs on separate tracks. The fee is between 800 to 8000 yen, in addition to the base fare.

Japan Transportation – By Boat

The nation is connected with ferry services scattered throughout the island. There are two benefits of using ferries for transport:

1) You can easily get from one place to another

2) You can discover new places

The schedule of this service varies in the price of the ticket – from travelling and arriving between adjacent islands in two hours, to making 1½ day trip for the same route.

Most ferries carry cars, bikes, and motorcycles too.

Typical Highway in Japan
Typical Highway in Japan

Japan Transportation – By Bus

In almost every Japanese city there is bus service; however, it is usually not a good option for foreign travelers. However, in many of the tourist towns, buses especially for tourists often run from the main railway station. Cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto even run tours in English, for its foreign visitors.

Travelling in Japan is not so difficult once you understand all the various options at your disposal. Travel safe!

My absolute favorite method of Japan transportation travel is by train.

It is very easy once you get the system down (be sure to check out my article on riding the bullet train in Japan). In major cities, the subway lines are owned and operated by multiple companies making switching difficult as each company only produces a map for their lines!

This means walking up to 4 maps possibly and writing down which stations to change on.

But, it’s part of the excitement and the adventure! Bus’s are great, too, but it is best to do your homework before you go. There isn’t much English posted around so best to try planning your route before hand. When I went skiing in Nagano several years ago, I had to take 2 trains and 2 bus’s. But a little planing beforehand, everything was super fun!

Enjoy!

Lizard Peninsula Cornwall – Visit of Grandeur and Tranquility

The Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall England, a destination as exquisite as its name, stands proudly in the sea. Paradoxically, the peninsula presents a rugged face to the rudiments but the climate is probably one of the warmest in Britain.

Unpolluted by industries the air is crisp, clear and fresh, making breathing so much easier than it is out in the cities at Lizard Peninsula.

Small villages protected by the giant cliffs and towering rocks make you travel back in time and experience what you cannot in today’s busy world. Since it has flat terrain, exploring it on foot or on a bike is ideal.

Fishing Villages

porthlevencyclehire.com is a great place to rent bikes and you can do it online.

Hiking has always been one of my most beloved hobbies. Hiking through The Lizard Peninsula with my wife was my dream.

It is recognized in Britain as one of the most important pieces of land where more than fifteen of Britain’s rarest plants can be found.

Stunningly beautiful throughout the year it can be quite rightfully said that there is no place like it in the whole of Britain. The area is also famous for the wildlife that it proudly boasts of. The Lizard has remained an inspiration for artists and writers who were spellbound by the stunningly beautiful scenery that it had to offer.

When we visited The Lizard Peninsula we could see seals and even basking sharks. This left me open mouthed. The imposing cliffs have a beauty of their own. The views from this stretch of Cornwall are breathtaking. You will get to witness everything imaginable once you visit The Lizard Peninsula. From the storm ragged harbors in the west to the small but sheltered villages in the east there are a number of locations you can visit.

The beautiful Kynance Cove, Cornwall
The beautiful Kynance Cove, Cornwall

The colorful boats pulled up on the beach and the cluster of houses with thatched roofs gave the surroundings a peaceful look. To get outside the routine hustle bustle of the city and into the serene exquisiteness of insignificant fishing villages such as Cadgwith and Mullion Covecome where people depended so highly on the sea for their daily livelihood left me wondering about the lost tranquility in our lives.

The most prized possession of The Lizard Peninsula by all means is the Kynance Cove.

The tough climb downwards is worth the clean yellow mounds of rolling sand the gigantic red and green serpentine rocks polished by the sea over centuries and the magnificent roaring blue sea. BBC describes the coast as “one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the South West.” And my wife and I could not agree less.

Helston is one other such place that I would like everyone to visit. To experience the Furry Dance, a prehistoric pagan festival, visit The Lizard on May 8. The dance celebrates the passing of winter and the arrival of spring. The dancers wear the Helston’s symbolic flower Lily of the Valley to follow the tradition. This experience will always be one of the very best.

My trip to The Lizard was one of those breath taking experiences where time flies fast but leaves a long lasting impact on your mind for days to come.

The Lizard Peninsula remained a topic of discussion for many days in our house. Reliving the memories refreshed us. Planning a trip again would not be a bad idea come to think of it!

Enjoy!

Packing for Israel: A Basic Guide to Get You Going!

Some of my friends visiting Israel for the first time ask me for tips on packing. I tell them that there is nothing that they can’t buy over here, and so they should relax and get what they can carry with them when they are traveling.

Israel has such a diverse landscape it’s funny!

Did you know you can ski in the north during the winter and then drive down 6 hours and be on the hot beaches on Eilat?

Same day! Truly!

But some are insistent, and over a period of time, I have made an inventory which I put forward in such occasions.

Packing for Israel: It’s your call, and also the weather’s

If it’s a summer visit, then it is a good idea to have light clothing, half sleeves, shorts, sandals, beach wear, and shades. It’s also necessary to have a couple of pieces of light winter wear or two as nights in the desert and the mountains are cooler. Water bottles or pouches are mandatory though, and it depends on you whether you want to carry one, or buy it from here.

It helps with the diverse weather patterns throughout the country. In the north it can be very hot and super humid. In the south it can be very hot during the day, cool in the evenings, and very dry. Jerusalem can be quite hot during the day but often cools off in the evenings cause it’s in the Judaean Hills.

Winter would make it necessary to have warm clothing, gloves, a raincoat, and an umbrella. Winters in Israel can get rainy, and it’s always better to be prepared.

Sunscreen, sun glasses, sun hat will be needed irrespective of the season!

Packing for Israel: Good shoes are very important

Be it the beaches, or the desert, you will need good shoes. In fact, your activities in Israel will most probably involve being outdoors most of the time–there are so many hiking opportunities. Even if you are not a bike enthusiast, you will be doing a lot of walking, especially in Jerusalem, and also in other cities.

It is important to have footwear that you are comfortable with. The ideal scenario is to bring those pairs in which you have done a lot of walking, and are really comfortable with. New pinch might really pinch, if you are doing a lot of walking all of a sudden.

Since there are so many beaches around, it is necessary to bring a pair which will still be comfortable when wet.

Packing for Israel: Some conservative (and modest) clothes

Don’t get me wrong, you can wear just about anything you like in most of Israel. But when you are visiting certain religious places, or visiting a local on Friday (Shabaat) evenings – it is expected that you follow certain dress codes.

Religious places require you to cover your shoulders and knees. So, a scarf and a long skirt will be required if you are fond of short dresses. You can wear those on your dress while visiting sacred places, and then pull them off, and everybody will be happy.

Similarly, on Shabaat you are expected to wear something which is a cut above your regular clothes. It does not have to be a tuxedo, or a gown, but something that you would wear on a special joyous occasion.

Packing for Israel: Light Luggage is less trouble and more fun

You will be hauling the luggage mostly yourself, so it is better to carry as less as possible. A large duffel bag with wheels and a middle-sized back-pack which can double as your carry bag on short tours is the ideal combination.

When packing for Israel, even when I lived there, I would always carry around a light backpack.

You just didn’t know when you needed to carry something. Most of the time, it was a bottle of water and a hat. But the country is small, too. So you can hop on a bus in Jerusalem and be at the beach in Tel Aviv in under an hour! So, pack your bathing suit, sunblock, and head out for the gorgeous beaches!

And remember when I said about skiing in Israel, be sure to check this out!

Enjoy!
